Rolling a 7 in Catan

Share of rolls
16.7%

6 of the 36 ways two dice can land make 7, so you see one about every 6.0 rolls — 16.7 times in 100.

Why the pips are the odds

A 7 carries no token at all, because it never produces. But it is made 6 ways out of 36, more than any other sum — the peak of the triangle every other number sits on the side of.

Ways to roll each sum with two dice. 7 is the peak, which is why it moves the robber instead of producing anything.

What the 7 costs you

Every other number on the board is a chance to gain something. The 7 is the one that takes: the robber moves, a hex stops producing, someone loses a card to a steal, and anyone holding 8 or more cards discards half of them. Over 100 rolls it lands 17 times — more often than any single number you could have built on.

That is also the strongest argument against hoarding. The question is not whether a 7 is coming, it is how many are coming before your next turn — which the discard risk calculator answers exactly for whatever hand size you are sitting on.
